Women emphasize they will be in the streets on May 1st for a humane life

In Istanbul's Tuzla district, two workers from different sectors voiced their concerns about working conditions, economic hardship, and demands ahead of the upcoming May 1st. The workers highlighted low wages, job insecurity, and workplace injustices, emphasizing their demand for a "humane life."

One retired worker, employed at the same factory for 30 years, stated that despite retirement, he continues to work due to financial difficulties. He explained that he worked for years on minimum wage, resulting in a low pension. While acknowledging that his workplace is unionized, he noted that union representatives are ineffective in defending workers' rights, particularly highlighting recent wage problems.

The worker explained that they receive their wages irregularly and in installments at the beginning of the year, directly impacting their daily lives. "Even though our salaries are low, we plan accordingly. But when we only receive half of our pay, we end up paying late payment interest to the banks," he said, reacting angrily to his employer's response: "Did you ask me when you took out a loan?" A worker stated that due to the economic crisis, working days have also been reduced, and they work three days a week, approximately 12 days a month, making it impossible to make ends meet.

A female metalworker in the same area described the difficulties she faces due to being a woman at work. Stating that she has worked in heavy labor for many years, she said, “We work in jobs that many men find difficult, but we are still marginalized because we are women.” She added that the shift system is even more challenging for women, noting that they don't receive compensation for wear and tear during night shifts and face heavy deductions for absenteeism.

The metalworker stated that she is forced to take on extra jobs even on her days off due to financial difficulties, completely eliminating her social life. “Even though I have a day off, I go to clean houses. I don’t have any time left for myself,” she said, emphasizing the need for improved working conditions.

Both workers stated that their demands are the same as they approach May 1st: secure employment, a decent wage, and equal and humane living conditions. The workers in Tuzla will be in the streets with these demands.
