A statement was issued against the planned geothermal project in Varto district of Mus

Residents of Varto district in Muş province gathered on Sakarya Street to protest the planned geothermal project. The statement was read by Selvi Toprak Fırat on behalf of the Varto Residents Association. Sümeyye Boz, a Member of Parliament from the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), participated in the event, which featured banners reading "Varto doesn't want geothermal."

Selvi Toprak Fırat stated that the project would affect all the villages in Varto district, saying, “This planned activity in this vast geographical area threatens our pastures, water resources, and our lives based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Numerous drilling points will riddle our soil, irreversibly damaging our natural balance. We are not unfamiliar with this situation. We have seen the trees cut down in Akbelen, the nature plundered in Karakara, the forests destroyed for mining and energy projects across the country, the drying streams, and the displaced villages. We know how nature is sacrificed under the name of 'development' and how promises are broken.”

“This project will bring migration and poverty”
Stating that what is being attempted in Varto today is a continuation of the same understanding, Selvi Toprak Fırat drew attention to the fact that IGNIS H2 Energy Production Inc. has connections with international capital. Selvi Toprak Fırat said, “The pastures, water, and living spaces of Varto are not profit areas for international companies. These lands are not ownerless areas to be handed over to multinational companies with decisions made at a desk. It is unacceptable for companies from outside to establish control over the region by ignoring the will of the local people. This project is being attempted to be advanced with the method of ‘make it look small - evade the EIA - then enlarge it’. No process conducted without public participation and without transparency is legitimate. The people of Varto have been left out of this process, and the truth has been hidden. If this project is implemented; the water will be polluted, the soil will become infertile, the pastures will disappear, and livestock farming will end. The result is clear: migration and impoverishment.”

DEM Party Member of Parliament Sümeyye Boz stated that they came together to voice their opposition to the geothermal power plants planned for Varto, saying, “We need to ask why geographical areas like Varto are chosen? There is a system in this country that produces violence. Violence has become so normalized in our lives. As we have seen examples of the spiral of violence from Siverek to Maraş, these policies also reveal how they lead to the plunder of nature. We will protect our land and water against this plundering and destructive mentality. We will fight to prevent it from being handed over to the interests of companies. We know that you are disturbing the rulers as we expand this struggle. They think they can make the people of Varto give up their resistance, but we will never give up this struggle until the decision is officially received. We will continue to defend a democratic ecological society against all systems that consider destruction their duty.”
