Google continues to bring special days to its homepage with doodles. So, what is the meaning and importance of April 23rd, what happened on April 23rd? Here are the details...

WHAT IS THE MEANING AND IMPORTANCE OF APRIL 23RD NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY AND CHILDREN'S DAY?

April 23rd National Sovereignty and Children's Day is one of the official holidays and national holidays of the Republic of Turkey. This holiday was gifted to children by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of the Republic of Turkey. It is also an official holiday and national celebration in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

This holiday was formed by the spontaneous merging of several events: the 23 April National Holiday, which began to be celebrated on the first anniversary of the opening of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey; the National Sovereignty Day, initially celebrated on November 1st after the abolition of the monarchy on November 1, 1922, and later merged with the 23 April National Holiday in 1935; and the 23 April Children's Day, declared by the Society for the Protection of Children in 1927, the first celebration of which was held under Atatürk's patronage.

Most recently, during the 1980 coup d'état, the National Security Council officially named this holiday "23 April National Sovereignty and Children's Day." National Sovereignty Day (formerly November 1st, then April 23rd) aimed to celebrate the abolition of the monarchy and the opening of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, which transferred sovereignty from the Sultan to the people. Children's Day, on the other hand, aimed to bring joy to poor children orphaned during the war in a spring festival atmosphere. Today, children from other countries participate in the celebrations, various performances are prepared, and ceremonies and various activities are organized in schools. Furthermore, the tradition of Atatürk receiving children in his office, which began in 1933, continues today with children briefly taking the place of officials at the head of state institutions.

Following UNESCO's declaration of 1979 as the Year of the Child, the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) launched the TRT International April 23rd Children's Festival, elevating the holiday to an international level.

WHY IS APRIL 23RD IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN?

April 23rd is the first children's holiday celebrated worldwide. Children from other nations also participate in these festivities, a holiday gifted to Turkish children by Atatürk. Atatürk highly valued children; during his travels, he would visit schools, listen to lessons, and ask questions. Saying, "Today's children are tomorrow's leaders," Atatürk initiated the tradition of handing over administrative duties to students for the duration of the holiday. On April 23rd, elected boards and administrative units are temporarily entrusted to children. This beautiful tradition is repeated every year. Every April 23rd, all of Türkiye becomes a festive area. Children give speeches and recite poems at the ceremonies.
