Turmeric and ginger extract may strengthen bone implants

Scientists in the United States have proven that these ingredients help bone implants fuse better and be more protected. They may also help eliminate harmful bacteria and cells.
Turmeric and ginger are rhizomes , a special type of root, which is why they are often colloquially called roots.

Researchers at Washington State University in the United States discovered that an extract of these ingredients, in laboratory and animal tests, helps bone implants bond better to the bone and also eliminates bacteria and cancer cells.

This breakthrough could have applications in the field of medicine in the future if the results are confirmed in humans. It was published in the journal of the American Ceramic Society .
In the experiments, the extract managed to double the strength with which the bone bonds to the implant in just six weeks.

It also eliminated over 90% of the bacteria that typically appear on the surface of implants and significantly reduced the number of surrounding cancer cells. Thus, medicine and nature can be combined to offer new and accessible solutions.

Turmeric, with its golden color, and ginger, with its unique flavor, have always been valued in China and India for maintaining health and treating various ailments.

Professor Susmita Bose , who leads the scientific team, explained that this breakthrough combines the best of nature with the latest medical technology.

Tradition and Their new study is part of a line of research that seeks to harness natural compounds to enhance modern medical treatments.

The group of scientists had already worked with 3D printing to create bone implants, a technique that is now common in many hospitals.

In this research, the team focused on the most common problems of those who have metal implants.
In the United States alone, nearly seven million people use hip or knee replacements, and many must undergo further surgeries because the implants do not adhere well or weaken over time.

Infections on the surface of implants present another challenge. Almost a third of failed cases are related to bacteria that are difficult to eliminate, often requiring removal of the prosthesis and leading to complications and high medical costs.

Turmeric and ginger extract was also tested against osteosarcoma, the most common bone cancer in adolescents and young adults. Even after surgery and chemotherapy, some cancer cells manage to survive.

Scientists coated titanium implants with the extract so that the compounds would be released gradually and act over a prolonged period.

Laboratory tests and tests on rats with femur implants showed that the extract doubled the bond between the bone and the implant, destroyed 92% of the bacteria, and reduced the number of cancer cells near the implant by eleven times, compared to those who did not receive the treatment.
This advance represents a promising alternative in research for problems that affect many people.

Professor Amit Bandyopadhyay , a member of the team, emphasized that this approach allows them to address several problems at the same time: infections, poor bone integration, and malignant cells.

Every improvement counts for those who depend on implants in their hips, knees, spine, or shoulders, and could make a difference in recovery and quality of life if applied to humans.
The research involved scientists from various universities in the United States. They contributed expertise in engineering, veterinary medicine, and materials science.

Dr. Bose explained that turmeric and ginger, in addition to these effects on implants, offer anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties when they are part of the daily diet.

These natural compounds appear as useful allies for bone health and general well-being, and open up new possibilities in medicine.
