Several beaches in Guadeloupe have been temporarily closed to swimming after bacterial contamination was detected in the water. Health tests in Bouillante and Saint-François revealed the presence of bacteria linked to wastewater discharges.

Access to some swimming areas in Guadeloupe has been temporarily banned. The governor of the Guadeloupe region asked the mayors of Bouillante and Saint-François to issue municipal decrees banning access to certain swimming areas after bacterial contamination was detected in the water.

Anse Thomas in Bouillante affected
The Anse Thomas swimming area in Bouillante is affected by this measure. According to analyses conducted by the Regional Health Agency (ARS) as part of hygienic control of swimming waters, significant bacterial contamination was detected in samples taken on May 4th.

The results show that regulatory thresholds for the presence of intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli have been exceeded; these bacteria are indicative of fecal contamination.

Three facilities closed in Saint-François.
The same situation applies in Saint-François; Three areas here have been temporarily closed to swimming: the lagoon, the water sports center, and the salt flats. Analyses conducted there by the Regional Health Agency (ARS) revealed pollution resulting from the direct discharge of wastewater into the swimming areas.

These temporary bans will remain in effect until further health testing is completed. Authorities state that this decision aims to protect the public and visitors, particularly the most vulnerable.
