Opening ceremony and live screening of the opening film at a cinema in Paris

This year, the opening ceremony and opening film of the Cannes 2026 Festival will be screened live in cinemas in Paris; this Tuesday, May 12th.

In 2025, more than 780 cinemas in 700 municipalities across France broadcast the opening ceremony and opening film of the Cannes Festival live. For this 79th edition, the most important cinematic gathering will take place between May 12-23, 2026, and will be met with the same enthusiasm.

This year, this initiative, launched under the leadership of the Cannes Film Festival and with the friendly support of France Télévisions, the French National Federation of Cinemas, and the CNC and AFCA, will be brought to life this Tuesday, May 12th, in cinemas in Paris and Île-de-France. These include mk2 Odéon, mk2 Bibliothèque, and mk2 Nation.

As all participating cinemas prepare to screen the Ceremony presented by Eye Haïdara, the presence of New Zealand director, producer and screenwriter Peter Jackson, who will be on stage as a special guest, stands out; Jackson will be honored with the Golden Palm Honour for his career.
