THE VALUES AND RIGHTS OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS MUST BE RESPECTED ![]() THE VALUES AND RIGHTS OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS MUST BE RESPECTED Former President Ersin Tatar stated, “Just as we do not want the church bells to be silenced, the Greek Cypriot side must show the same respect for the flag and sacred values of the Turkish Cypriot nation.” In a written statement, Tatar noted that the attacks by the Greek Cypriot administration against the values, sacred values, and rights of the Turkish Cypriot people have increased in recent days. Tatar stated that the proposal to remove the TRNC flag from the Five Finger Mountains under the guise of a “confidence-building measure,” as reported in a South Cypriot newspaper, is absolutely unacceptable. Tatar added, “The decision to change the name of Kemal Atatürk Street in Paphos during the same period is another indication of the intolerance on the Greek Cypriot side. The Greek Cypriot administration is clearly becoming increasingly arrogant with the support it receives from the UN and the EU, pushing its intransigence to its peak.” Tatar continued his statement as follows: “Let no one miscalculate. The Turkish Cypriot people will continue to resolutely protect their state, flag, and national values. We have never targeted the religious values of the Greek Cypriot community. We have respected their churches, bells, and places of worship. Today, in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, places of worship belonging to different faiths are protected, necessary restorations are carried out, and religious freedoms are respected. Just as we do not want the church bells to be silenced, the Greek Cypriot side must show the same respect for the flag and sacred values of the Turkish nation.” Stating that peace is possible through mutual understanding and respect, Tatar noted that the steps taken by some circles on the Greek Cypriot side who still harbor the dream of Enosis are harming the atmosphere of reconciliation. Tatar stated, “The Turkish Cypriot people are determined to protect their rights, sovereignty, and sacred values. No one should have any doubt about this. A realistic solution in Cyprus is cooperation between two states.” THE VALUES AND RIGHTS OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS MUST BE RESPECTED |
