THE KILLER WHO PLANNED TO MURDER A NAVY OFFICER ON MAY 9TH HAS BEEN TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

The suspect in the case is a repeat offender from the Donetsk region, previously convicted of premeditated murder.

The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) counterintelligence unit prevented a high-profile terrorist attack in Odessa. According to a statement from the SBU press service, a Russian agent who attempted to assassinate a high-ranking official in the Ukrainian Navy was detained in the city.

The statement said, "The arrest was made possible thanks to the proactive 24/7 work of the SBU and the timely information provided by a concerned citizen who called the Security Service's hotline to report a suspicious person."

According to Russian intelligence agencies, the assassination of the officer was to be carried out on May 9th to create a favorable information environment for the Kremlin's "Victory Day" celebrations.

According to investigators, the killer planned to ambush the Ukrainian soldier near his residence and shoot him with an automatic weapon.

The SBU learned that the attacker planned to open fire as the police officer drove away from the courtyard. It is important to note that counter-intelligence officers and special forces from the Alpha Special Operations Center thwarted the assassination attempt and detained the killer on May 8th.

The suspect in the case is a repeat offender from the Donetsk region, previously convicted of premeditated murder, and recruited by the enemy. According to the intelligence agency, the man attracted the attention of the Russians by searching for "easy money" on private Telegram channels.

After being recruited, the attacker came to Odessa and rented an apartment to prepare for the assassination. First, the attacker found the apartment of a Ukrainian soldier, thoroughly examined the surrounding area, and selected ambush locations. Then, he received the coordinates of the hiding places from his Russian superior and obtained an AK-74 assault rifle and two loaded magazines from there.

According to the SBU statement, the killer used a double-bottomed bag to conceal the weapon while moving around the city. During the search, an automatic rifle and ammunition, as well as a mobile phone used to coordinate his actions with a Russian intelligence officer, were seized from the detainee.

In this case, the defendant is reported as a suspect under two articles of the Ukrainian Criminal Code: Article 111, paragraph 2 (treason committed under martial law); Article 15, paragraph 3; and Article 258 (incomplete attempt to commit a terrorist act).

The perpetrator is currently in custody and faces a life sentence and confiscation of property.

Other events in Odessa
As a reminder, on March 14, 2025, prominent activist Demian Ganul was shot dead on Oleksandrovskyi Boulevard in the center of Odessa. The suspect in the murder was later detained. A weapon was found in the apartment where he was hiding. The SBU claimed that the gunman was a 46-year-old fugitive. Ivan Vyhovskyi, head of the Ukrainian National Police, stated at the time that the suspect – a soldier who was placed on the wanted list for deserting his unit without permission on February 23, 2025 – was identified in just five hours.
