We must protect our children and provide them with a digital shield

Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş stated that children face serious risks in digital environments and that regulations for social media will be implemented for children under 15. Göktaş emphasized that regulations targeting digital platforms are inevitable for the protection of children, saying, "We must protect our children and provide them with a digital shield."

In a statement on tv100, Minister Göktaş noted that all ministries are closely monitoring the situation following the school attack in Kahramanmaraş. She stated that a team composed of members from various professional groups has been formed to support families, particularly during the grieving process.

Göktaş added that these teams, primarily consisting of psychologists, will play a crucial role in helping children overcome the trauma they experienced and regain their trust in school. Göktaş stated the following:

- "I was in Kahramanmaraş today with our ministers. I want to express my deep sorrow over the incident. All our ministers are closely following the process. We have formed a support team after the incident. We are especially with the families during this period of mourning. We have established a special team for this purpose.

- We have formed a team of psychologists from various professional groups. This team is very valuable in helping our children regain their confidence in school and overcome this shock. As of Monday, teams are working in this vein throughout Kahramanmaraş.

- There have been many different assessments after the incident. Families have also mentioned this many times in recent days, regarding the need for regulation of social media. The families of the injured also expressed this. This issue was proposed by our AK Party group.

- We are implementing social media regulation for those under 15. These are very important steps. Our children are at risk on social media. Some behaviors can develop through imitation. Cyberbullying and addiction are issues. Children can develop wrong perceptions while playing games that cause perceptual disorders.

- In our studies, while playing games..." They can feel themselves in very different roles. This is a non-political issue. Many countries in the world are moving in this direction. We also have regulations regarding games. We requested representatives for games with 100,000 active players. Our children play games with many people on the internet.

- We have to protect them and provide a digital shield. In this day and age, our children will of course be with the digital world, but we cannot ignore these risks. We know that very important people are posing as children and exposing children to different content.

- It is also important to raise awareness among families through digital literacy training. Our children should be able to receive support from our experts in case of negative behaviors. As a ministry, we provide such support in all 81 provinces. When our families face such negative situations, we have such programs for our children in adolescence, in this dialogue environment.

- Our aim is to achieve social consensus here. This is the demand of 80% of families. We call this the new caregiver. Social media addiction affects all... It's on the world's agenda, and we will also put this issue on our agenda. As the AK Party and MHP groups, we can pass this through Parliament, but we all need to address this issue as a matter above politics and see it as such.

- Not providing services to those under 15 is one of these topics. We expect support from the opposition on these issues. That's why we want representatives from the platforms. To be able to reach them when a problem arises and to create a positive environment.

- We have been working on a social risk map for a long time. What is this? Our ministry is a preventive ministry. It foresees taking sufficient measures before an incident occurs. We are discussing how to strengthen the impact mechanisms before an incident occurs. We are conducting these studies household by household in Türkiye, and we have completed our social risk map.

- We have completed 13 social risk maps. Child involvement in crime, violence against women, and many more... We see the data in these maps. We identify the risks of households. This is a dynamic map. In such cases, we are creating a mechanism where we can work together with the Ministry of National Education, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Directorate of Religious Affairs, and other ministries.

- It's not just our ministry here. We receive data from both the Ministry of Interior and the judicial police, and they show us the risk ratio of a household using a multiplier code. Many ministries also enable us to strengthen effective enforcement mechanisms. Looking at this specific issue, we see that it's not a child who is being drawn into crime; we see that it's an introverted child carrying different risks.
