Facial deformity corrected with 3D technology ![]() Facial deformity corrected with 3D technologySamet Çağlar, a 16-year-old from Trabzon whose daily life was negatively affected by facial deformities, regained both his aesthetic appearance and facial functions through surgery at Karadeniz Technical University (KTU) Farabi Hospital. Çağlar, who lives in the Çarşıbaşı district, was involved in a traffic accident some time ago. Following the accident, his face suffered collapse and deformity, prompting him and his family to seek solutions. Çağlar contacted Prof. Dr. Muhammet Uraloğlu, a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Specialist at KTU Farabi Hospital. After detailed examinations by Prof. Dr. Uraloğlu and his team, the deformity on Çağlar's face was analyzed using tomography and 3D modeling. Missing tissues were identified, and a custom-designed implant was created. The implant, produced quickly at the Medical Device Design and Production Application and Research Center within KTU, was surgically implanted in Çağlar. "THE SURGERY WAS EXTREMELY SUCCESSFUL" Prof. Dr. Uraloğlu, who performed the operation, stated that the patient had applied to them approximately 3 months ago to correct a facial deformity. Stating that they conducted the necessary examinations for the patient, Uraloğlu said, "First, we performed a 3D model by taking a thin-section tomography scan. We created a model of the skull and identified the missing tissue. Using a mirror image of the healthy side, we identified the missing part and produced a custom-made implant." Uraloğlu emphasized that the method provides perfect symmetry, saying, "Previously, we would correct the deformity by taking bone from the patient's hip or fat from the abdominal tissue, creating a similar appearance. In other words, because we couldn't precisely identify the deficiency and create a 3D model, only a rough correction was achieved. Now, with 3D modeling, a perfect, exact correction is achieved." Uraloğlu emphasized that the implant prepared for Çağlar was successfully applied, stating, "Our patient is doing very well now, he has no infection, and no complications developed. The surgery was extremely successful. We applied the implant very well, and it was a perfect surgery." |
