In motorcycle accidents, a helmet alone is not enough ![]() In motorcycle accidents, a helmet alone is not enoughOrthopedics and Traumatology Specialist Prof. Dr. İbrahim Azboy stated that two-wheeled vehicles have become a major cause of permanent disabilities due to misuse and inadequate equipment, drawing attention to the increasing number of young drivers arriving at hospitals with severe trauma and issuing warnings. Prof. Dr. Azboy said, "The use of equipment is vital in motorcycle accidents. Wearing just a helmet is not enough. The idea of 'I'll only go a short distance' is completely wrong. Gloves, knee pads, and equipment that protects the ankle, back, and spine must be used." Prof. Dr. İbrahim Azboy from Medipol Health Group stated that with the increasing traffic congestion in large cities, motorcycle accidents have become one of the biggest causes of permanent disability at a young age, and that they frequently encounter serious fractures around the ankle, knee, and hip in motorcycle accidents, issuing vital warnings to drivers. Prof. Dr. Azboy said that there has been a significant increase in the number of young people presenting to hospitals with severe trauma after motorcycle accidents. "YOUNG PATIENTS ARRIVE WITH SERIOUS FRACTURES" "HELMETS ALONE ARE NOT ENOUGH" Emphasizing that the most effective way to prevent accidents is to obey traffic rules, Prof. Azboy stated, “The use of equipment is vital. Just wearing a helmet is not enough. The idea of ‘I'll only go a short distance’ is completely wrong. Gloves, knee pads, and equipment that protects the ankles, back, and spine must be used. It is important to remember how serious the traumas caused by motorcycle accidents are. Incorrect interventions after motorcycle accidents can also increase the damage. Life-threatening situations such as neck fractures, spinal fractures, and hip fractures and dislocations can occur. Until emergency teams arrive, the patient should not be moved, and they should not be told, ‘There’s nothing wrong with you, get up and walk.’ It is crucial that the patient is placed on a trauma board and transferred correctly to the nearest health center.” |
