In Şanlıurfa, a car whose driver lost control overturned into an irrigation canal. Mehmet El Mezar (36), a Syrian national, entered the canal to help and saved the lives of two women in the car, but he was swept away by the current. Despite interventions, El Mezar could not be saved.
The accident occurred yesterday evening near Külünçe neighborhood on the Şanlıurfa-Akçakale highway. The car, whose driver's identity has not yet been determined, went out of control and overturned into the irrigation canal. Seeing the accident, Mehmet El Mezar moved to rescue police officer Nimet C. and Rukiye A., who were waiting for help in the water.
Seeing police officer Nimet C. and Rukiye A. jump into the canal, Mehmet El Mezar jumped in himself. Losing his strength due to the current, El Mezar was swept away by the water. Citizens who witnessed the accident also joined the rescue efforts. They pulled the women and El Mezar out of the water with the help of ropes.
El Mezar, Nimet C., and Rukiye A. were taken to Şanlıurfa Education and Research Hospital. Mehmet El Mezar could not be saved despite all the efforts of the doctors.
