Associate Professor Dr. Haydar Gök, a specialist in Neurosurgery, stated that using the wrong pillow can disrupt the natural curve of the neck, leading to pain, muscle tension, and decreased sleep quality. He emphasized that the correct pillow selection should be based on the individual's sleeping position, body structure, and spinal alignment, highlighting that ergonomic and medium-firm pillows play a significant role in protecting neck health.
Dr. Gök, a Neurosurgery specialist, stressed that the most important aspect of neck health is maintaining the natural structure of the spine during sleep. He said, “Using the wrong pillow can disrupt the natural curve of the neck, causing both pain and decreased sleep quality. The most appropriate pillow selection should be determined according to the individual's sleeping position, body structure, and the natural curve of the neck.” He added that the correct alignment of the head, neck, and spine during sleep is critical for healthy sleep, and that choosing the wrong pillow can lead to neck pain and muscle tension. Dr. Gök emphasized that the most important aspect of neck health is maintaining the natural structure of the spine during sleep, stating, "Using the wrong pillow can disrupt the natural curve of the neck, leading to both pain and a decrease in sleep quality."
Highlighting that an ideal pillow should keep the head, neck, and spine in the same plane, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gök said, "The pillow should support the natural C-shaped curve of the neck and ensure that the head is neither too high nor too low." Stating that height is the most important criterion in pillow selection, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gök said, "If the pillow is too high, the neck bends forward; if it is too low, it falls backward. In both cases, the spinal alignment is disrupted, and this can lead to pain over time."
Gök added that pillow selection should vary according to individual sleep habits, saying, "Those who sleep on their side should prefer thicker pillows that fill the shoulder gap. Medium-height pillows are suitable for those who sleep on their back, while those who sleep on their stomach may prefer very thin pillows or no pillow at all." Highlighting the importance of ergonomic pillows that support the neck cavity, Dr. Gök stated, “Contoured pillows that provide cervical support can help reduce neck pain by assisting in the correct alignment of the spine.”
Dr. Gök also noted that the firmness and material of the pillow should not be overlooked, explaining, “Very soft pillows do not provide sufficient support. Medium-firm pillows, made of materials like memory foam or latex that retain their shape, offer more balanced support.” Emphasizing that no single pillow is suitable for everyone, Dr. Gök added, “The most appropriate pillow choice should be determined according to the individual's sleeping position, body structure, and the natural curve of the neck. A good pillow should not only provide comfort but also ensure the correct alignment of the spine.”
