RAPID WEIGHT LOSS ISN'T PERMANENT WHAT'S THE SECRET TO HEALTHY WEIGHT LOSS

Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu, pointing out that weight loss occurs when the body expends more energy than it takes in, explained the key points of healthy weight loss.

"Teas that reduce edema and coffees that promote weight loss provide only temporary effects," she said.

"Referring to the recent increase in water diets, detoxes, teas that reduce edema, and coffees that promote weight loss on social media, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu stated, "None of these approaches provide permanent weight loss on their own. Even if there are short-term changes, this often does not mean fat loss." Noting that healthy weight loss is not possible without regular and balanced nutrition, İspiroğlu stated, “These kinds of products or applications do not replace the process; they only create a temporary effect. Much of the content shared on social media is based on personal experiences. It does not contain a scientific evaluation. Furthermore, every individual's metabolism is different. Therefore, a method that seems effective for one person may not yield the same result for another. The same approach cannot work for every individual. Unconscious application of such approaches can pose health risks. A cautious approach should be taken to the applications seen on social media, and the process should be planned in a personalized and sustainable way.”

Develop sustainable eating habits

Pointing out that weight loss occurs when the body expends more energy than it takes in, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu said, “However, the important thing is to establish this balance sustainably, not just for a short period. Eating a sufficient and balanced diet, maintaining muscle mass, and organizing daily life accordingly are the most important parts of the process.” Underlining that the weight loss process is not only about what you eat but also about your habits, İspiroğlu continued: “Setting realistic goals, not rushing the process, and making small but lasting changes yield much more effective results in the long run. One of the most common mistakes in the clinic is restricting nutrition excessively. This approach, driven by the desire for rapid weight loss, may yield results in the short term, but it is not sustainable in the long term. Recently popular, scientifically weak, and overly restrictive dietary approaches also carry similar risks. While they may provide rapid weight loss, they can negatively impact health in the long term. Therefore, instead of focusing on quick results in the weight loss process, it is necessary to progress sustainably. Because what is permanent is lifestyle change.”

Don't rush the weight loss process!

Highlighting that the biggest mistake many people make when trying to lose weight is trying to speed up the process, Nutrition and Diet Specialist Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu said, “Seeing change quickly is appealing, but the body is not suited to such rapid change. Weight lost quickly is often regained just as quickly, making the process even more difficult.” Reminding that the weight loss process is not only a physical process, İspiroğlu said, “An approach that is constantly critical and dissatisfied with one's own body cannot be sustainable. The goal should not be to ignore or punish the body; it should be to understand it and move it to a better point. The expectation of quick results and the search for easy solutions increase the tendency to resort to such wrong methods.”

Muscle loss, decreased metabolic rate, and hormonal imbalances…

Hülya Yiğit İspiroğlu, noting that while extremely restrictive dietary approaches that cause rapid weight loss may seem to yield results in the short term, they can create certain risks in the body, said: “Muscle loss, decreased metabolic rate, and hormonal imbalances are among the most frequently encountered problems in this process. Therefore, it is important to manage the process not only through weight loss but also by preserving body composition. At this point, the number on the scale should not be seen as a goal alone. Because the quality of weight loss is at least as important as the amount. Reduction in fat mass, preservation of muscle mass, and maintenance of metabolic balance are fundamental indicators of a healthy process. Therefore, instead of focusing only on the number, the changes in the body should be evaluated holistically.”
