A group of scientists discovered a new island in the Antarctic Ocean

Learn the details of this discovery and how the study of the land block that was mistaken for an iceberg was carried out.

A group of scientists aboard the German icebreaker Polarstern made a discovery that shook the world. During a recent exploration, they discovered a previously undocumented island in one of the most remote areas of the Antarctic Ocean .

The expedition, made up of international researchers and coordinated by the Alfred Wegener Institute , had as its main objective to study ocean currents and the evolution of sea ice .
However, bad weather forced the crew to change course. It was during this detour that they spotted an ice-covered mound which, at first, they mistook for an iceberg.

How the island hidden under ice was discovered
Upon closer inspection, scientists determined that it was not a floating mass of ice, but rather an emergent rocky structure . The island measures approximately 130 meters long by 50 meters wide and rises 16 meters above sea level .

Until that moment, it did not appear on nautical charts and had never been identified as an independent formation.
To dispel any doubt, the Polarstern approached to within just 150 meters of the island . The team circled it and deployed a technological arsenal: they mapped the seabed with sonar and launched a drone to obtain high-resolution aerial images.

With that data, they were able to create an accurate digital representation of the topography and confirmed that it was a real island, not a temporary block of ice.

For now, the exact location remains confidential , as the process of classifying and updating international maps is still underway.
Why is this finding important?
The region where the island appeared is strategic for scientific research, especially because of its importance in the behavior of sea ice and its evolution in the face of climate change.

Since 2017, studies show that some areas of the Southern Ocean have suffered a significant reduction in ice extent , a phenomenon linked to the increase in surface water temperature.
These types of expeditions not only allow for the mapping of new formations, but also a better understanding of the processes that affect the stability of Antarctic ice , a central factor in the regulation of global climate and the dynamics of ocean currents.
