The fishing ban for fish living in Lake Van begins tomorrow

The fishing ban for pearl mullet in Lake Van begins tomorrow. Fishermen, who have already gathered their nets and pulled their boats ashore before the ban, which runs from April 15th to July 15th, plan to use the 90-day period to maintain their boats and nets.

Van Provincial Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Turgay Şişman, also inspected the fishing boats moored at the pier in Edremit district and received information from the Head of the Fisheries Branch, Muhammet Demir.

Stating that the fish will be best protected during this period, Şişman noted that 15,000 people in the region earn their living from pearl mullet, and continued:

"We visited our fishermen. They cast their last nets and collected their catch. The fishing ban will begin tonight. Between April 15th and July 15th, our Van fish, which only lives in Lake Van, will migrate from salty and alkaline waters to freshwater during their breeding season to lay their eggs. During this period, the fish are unprotected and become targets for fishermen. It is easier to catch them in shallow waters. Teams from the Coast Guard Lake Van Group Command, the Provincial Gendarmerie Command, the Police Department, and our Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry will begin 24/7 inspections in the field starting tonight. We will do our best to ensure that the fish complete their breeding season comfortably and maintain their presence in the lake in a healthy manner."
